Seniors urge board to hold its ground

Enough is enough. They're asking our kids, not the teachers, to take cuts. But our kids are more important.

I don't have a problem paying taxes . . . It's the amount that's rubbing me raw! It's too much. It's got to end. Period.

I'm tearing my hair out . . . The board has to stop this now. If they don't, every time you bargain, it's going to be the same damn thing.

These are some of the reactions from senior citizens captured in today's Courier Times. If that wasn't enough, there was also another letter to the editor printed from a senior who said, "Thumbs up to school board President Ritchie Webb and the Neshaminy school board for their stand . . . The union president and her union members need to get REALISTIC."

Anyone out there listening? Hello, McFly?

I agree with what those people were saying but freeze taxes for seniors? Why do people assume there worse off than everyone else? My husband and I finally saved up enough money to go out for dinner last weekend for the first time in 2 months. The restarant was filled with seniors and the waitress told me most of them were regulars. Sure some seniors are poor and can't afford tax increases but you can say that about everyone else regardless of there age. I know there income doesn't increase but they also don't have morgages or kids in college. If you freeze there taxes then my taxes will go up even more. The board should hold the line on teacher expenses so that all tax payers benefit not just the seniors.

It's been weeks since anyone in the public has said bad things about our school board. Not even one of those nasty yet amazingly inaccurate editorials in the Courier Times. Wow Mr. O'Connor, it must feel good having people actually stand behind the board for a change. But you'll have to pass an unpopular budget in June and everyone will go back to hating you guys. Oh well, enjoy it while it lasts. :-)

I predict that at this very moment, somewhere in the Villages of Flower Mills, there is at least one senior citizen who is cursing LivinginLevittown.

Why is Steve Schoenstadt complaining? He was on the school board that passed this insane teachers contract to begin with!

Unknown said...

If true, News Flash, then Mr. Schoenstadt has nerve to show up at a meeting like this to cry about the taxes. It's like Dr. Frankenstein complaining about the monster he created!

Yes he was Gabriel.

Is it any worse Gabriel for Rick Eccles to publicly ask for teachers to make concessions when he too sat on that very same board that approved the last contract? Both men lacked vision and good business sense over 6 years ago, and now they point fingers at the teachers and call them greedy. Awfully convenient to blame your poor decisions on other people, isn't it?

We can't change past decisions or hypocrasy. All we can do now is to make good decisions going forward, and this board is heading in the right direction. I want the teachers to come back to negotiations willingly, but if they won't then let's get behind our board and encourage them to stay tough.
I'm convinced the teachers union is hoping this public anger will blow over. The best thing we can do is to keep talking it up and never let it die down. If we expect our board to remain vigilant, then we must do the same.

Sometimes we have bad decisions in Neshaminy like with the new high school. This is one of those times that the board is doing the right thing. Like Rebecca said, the board needs our support. I know that my child's teachers read this blog regularly. I hope the words written by me and all the others move you to do the right thing. Tell your union leaders to get back to the bargaining table NOW!!!!! It's time for you to pay for your benefits. You know it. We know it. Let's get it done before your reputations are forever tarnished.
