I realize standing around a flag pole is fairly harmless but every action these teachers take angers me more and more. The board hasn't been perfect but at least I trust their intentions and they have been open and transparent. The teachers won't every say anything in public but they love to post on facebook using made up names and spreading rumors.
I find it a joke for the nft to say its willing to meet whenever with the board yet it's been almost a week and they can't seem to give a written counter proposal. They say they are anxious to meet and negotiate but their actions say otherwise.
They just don't get it. Until they come to the table prepared to pay for benefits this contract will never get settled. They can stand around the flagpole and they can stay there as far as I'm concerned.
This is tantamount to intimidation, ie. "bullying" - and last I checked, is against District policy. Why can't they be held legally accountable, just as a student would???
I am a teacher (in NJ) and I pay for a percentage of my benefits. I do so with no complaint whatsoever, I can't say I know all the gritty details of these negotiations, but come on... in this reality, they should pay towards their benefits. I am grateful to have what I have - a job!
I also am a NJ school teacher and I am absolutely disgusted by the greed of Neshaminy teachers. Tell them to cross the bridge and see all of the teachers in Jersey that lost their jobs in June and all the schools that did not receive supplies for the school year because of the governor's education cuts.
I saw this on the courier blog and my jaw dropped..
I especially find the following quote very disturbing:

How do parents react to that statement as the teachers wear union shirts and gather in a group at back to school night and before school today?

I agree with the person who said the teacher's are really promoting a type of bullying and, frankly, if you really want to split hairs, arent' they also promoting "gang" mentality? Our kids are not allowed to wear anything that smacks of potential gang type involvement but what is the difference between holding "pow-wows" in front of flag poles, secret meetings, and wearing "gang uniforms". It's a disgrace and such an insult to the kids. Also, no classrooms decorated at Oliver Heckman - sad and I told the teacher in the classroom she is only hurting the kids and herself in the long run by creating so much ill will. Board, I"m begging you, please don't case as I hear so historically happens - please stand firm. Thank you.
I’m surprised they continued for the cameras last year when Fox News showed up they hid in their cars ….
Is there not a rule about gathering on the grounds of the school ? Peaceful…solidarity circle …protest does it matter? The NFT’s behavior is distractive and divisive. Is this really needed on our school grounds everyday? Is this the atmosphere we want for our students? Is this going to be tolerated?
This behavior influenced the students at Maple Point last year. They wanted to protest too… police were involved, fines handed out, students (150) suspended.
What if parents and taxpayers want to have their own solidarity circle… at the same flag pole… at the same time as the teachers … Would this be tolerated?

I agree with Jake. Neshaminy teachers need to realize that healthcare premiums are increasing at an alarming rate. I live in Langhorne and work for a small, successful company in Levittown. My company's greatest expense (besides labor) is healthcare. Our healthcare premiums increase annually at a minimum of 6% and we are expecting a double digit increase in 2011. Unfortunately we have to pass some, if not all of the increase on to our employees. Why do teachers in the Neshaminy district believe they shouldn't have to contribute to their healthcare premiums? Where is the district supposed to get the funds to cover the premium increases if the Teachers aren't willing to contribute? The taxpayers? We can't afford tax increases because the taxpayers of the district are, no doubt, paying towards their increased healthcare premiums. Also, statistics have shown that members who are responsible for contributing to their healthcare premiums, co-payments and deductibles, are less likely to receive un-necessary healthcare treatments, which ultimately increases premiums. I admit, I am not up to date on all of the contract issues being disputed but if healthcare contributions is the main sticking point, the school board needs to stand their ground. Teachers must realize that in this economy everyone has to accept some responsibility and contribute to the turnaround, whether it be by increased contributions or decreased compensation. To expect both pay raises and zero healthcare contribution is appauling.
People are missing the fact that Health care contribution, albeit the most important issue, is only one of several unsustainable costs to taxpayers that must be dealt with and conceded by the union. The NSB-NFT have not even discussed them.
